Vanity Of Man and Johnny Wxlf, frequent collaborators based in Pretoria/Kimberley, join forces to bring to life MMMMM? Swayze. A seven-track mixtape fused with Jazz, Hip Hop and R&B elements. The last time the two artists worked together it was on Johnny Wxlf’s Love Is Fiction, which featured on his debut solo mixtape Passive Aggressive Disorder.
The two artists open up their 2018 campaign with a very smooth sing along mixtape with summer aesthetics, which can also keep you comfort in the cold winter. The first song on the project is Matilda, a song of pursuit written to a lover who was too old back in the day. You know that one girl who was finishing high school when you just started, and you had a huge crush on her – yeah, that girl. “Matilda you are my peaches and cream, Matilda you make my pastures so green” The song samples Border Line by King Krule.
Mister Out The Door (M.O.T.D) well the title of the song seems to be very self-explanatory, we all know how fathers tend to walk out of their children’s lives. The song plays around that theme expressed around young women with “daddy issues”. “Daddy never loved you better” as the artists sing the hook of the song, she’s trying to find a father figure in every man that she comes across or possibly seeking the simplest thing – the love of a man. I believe that this role is played by Matilda. M.O.T.D maintains the Jazz and Soul elements that open the project.
Then it’s Music Acapella, an acapella interlude which isn’t long enough, it leaves you wishing that the boys would’ve gone in a bit longer but maybe somethings are best in snippet form. By now you should be picking up that the tape is themed around titles and topics that start with the letter “M” bare in mind why the title has the letter repeated five times. Swayze is Vanity Of Man’s alter ego and all the things that he encounters as he goes through the motions. Motown Groove must be the funkiest song on the EP and my personal favourite. Maybe In Another Life, is an easy going slow jam, where Vanity and Wxlf are most candid. Their verses are in the form of an open letter to a lover they lay everything to ground. The song samples Curse by The Internet
Overall the project manages to maintain the same musical sound without sounding monotonous, it’s seamless but what I’ve noticed is, it sounds better and makes more sense when you listen to it as a body of work. It also features two bonus tracks which you’ll find on the zip. Circles and Black Butterfly, in the zip you’ll also find a lyric book for all the songs on the project – which I feel is a very chic touch. You can stream or download the project above, enjoy.
