The Venda Popstar has firmly been claiming his position within the new brand of artists that have been grabbing the attention of many in the South African music space. His last drop was in 2016 with the dark and smooth Pink Moon, that really made you notice Una Rams, with lead singles such as Nobody. Pink Moon left you longing for more music from Mr Sneak Out The Friendzone. Backed by Black Coffee, Una Rams offers us the follow up to Pink Moon in the form of a six song EP titled Wavy Baby.

There’s an entire different feel to Wavy Baby, the extended play has a less dark presence that was on Pink Moon. Una Rams opens it up with Good Intentions assisted by Thabsie, the nucleus of the song and project is built around the concept of love and relationships. Una Rams discusses the topic of being more than just friends, which he previously expressed on More Than Friends off Pink Moon. He expresses his inability to deal with rejection when he shoots his shot and you can’t help but feel where he’s coming from.

Throughout the EP, Rams uses a lot of topics that are internet based and that establishes a lot of relation to the artist because he resonates well with his audience. It’s in his delivery of these topics where he triumphs most. From his production, the sound is a lot cleaner and smoother. Vocally, you just notice how much he’s improved from his last effort in 2016, his falsettos are crispier and smoother. Nothing epitomises this more than on Joy, from subject matter, production, to vocals. It’s these songs that scream “popstar”! Consisting of all the algorithms of a pop song that can live beyond the internet. One of the standout songs on the project has to be Murder, consisting of a darker R&B texture. A slow Afrobeat rendition that oozes a warm layer of vocals and production from C-Tea. The features from C-Tea and Seyi Shay make it more dimensional.

At times less is more and minimalism is the cornerstone of Wavy Baby, at just six songs long, the narrative is still clear and it doesn’t leave you wishing that the project were longer. Conceptually it is a compact piece of art that lacks nothing but an attentive ear.
