The last time Nelz released a body of work was last year July. A compact EP which was received well by her audience. What was important about I AM is how it ended. She capped it off with New Love and Make It Work, a pop love song and an ode to a bad break up respectively. It seems like Nelz managed to carry out that energy to her new work titled Lovies.
Lovies is a five song EP themed around the obvious topic of love. Rapping has always been her strong point but it’s always been public knowledge that Nelz is vocally capable. In a time where Hip Hop incorporates melodies so often, its a good time than ever for her to actually unlock that. Using a theme of love allows for her to do that so well. At the same time a lot of people want to hear Nelz rap.
Just like the last song on I AM, Lovies is executive produced by Tunez, who’s credited for four out of five songs on the EP. She opens things up with Backseat Lovin’, the song was released as a single earlier this year. An erotic narrative about making love in the back seat like Jack and Rose in Titanic. The song style allows Nelz to express herself more with a pop element which still maintains the hip hop factor. Lynex Beats takes care of the production and it’s commercially appealing.
Naughty is back to the business end of things, it throws out the smooth aesthetic of Backseat Lovin’ for a more nasty and raunchy feel, this is all owed to the production but works well with how Nelz approaches it. She still keeps with the sexual story line, it’s all in the title. Show Me is where the project gets darker, the love gets wilder, she finds herself uncertain with what love really is. It becomes more than just sex. She opens up on songs like In My Bed and Feeling. Nelz really manages to make Lovies a melodic body of work with elements of Dark R&B, the latter stages are symbolic to vulnerability of being naked and in love with someone.
A completely different listen compared to her previous work. Composed with synergy, it doesn’t sound monotonous and that’s thanks to the length of it which makes it an easy listen.
