Nirvana Nokwe has been slowly working on her craft as a multifacet artist, where her skill set starts from being a singer, songwriter it then includes music production, graphics, film and cinematography.

You start to ask yourself is there anything that Nirvana can’t do herself when it comes to making her art. The Johannesburg based art maker has been acquainted with South Africa’s most talented acts. She has been in the studio with OKMALUMKOOLKAT, made a cameo appearance in Muzi’s hit single Nu Day and laid some vocals on Yanga YaYa’s extended play Elements on the groovy Pb82 (Lead).

Though it really isn’t about who Nirvana has acquainted herself with that makes her art an interesting prospect. It is more about how she packages her work. She grabbed my attention when she put out her single Chiron last year, which had a trippy psychedelic texture while still feeling very bouncy as her vocals seduce you to a whirlpool of whimsical thoughts. She then conceptualised the art direction of that very single and shooting it with an iPhone. In the process of understanding her craft, she’s really gotten to grasp the art of minimalism but remaining effective.

As the pendulum of creativity swings in her favour, she manages to give birth to a project that has a high octane of spiritually, love and sexual expression. Cosmic Bae Trilogy III is the embodiment of the Nirvana Nokwe, she perfectly aligns her music with her personal aesthetic. In return that gives you an open and expressive project that still gives you a feeling that she held on to parts of herself – choosing to inject her audience with a small dosage of her energy.

At just a nifty ten minutes, Cosmic Bae Trilogy III opens up with I True Love and sets the tone of the brief musical journey. The song was written by herself, her mother Tu Nokwe and features backing vocals from her 11-year-old niece. The song encapsulates the essences of a spiritual trance, it feels like it is encoded with her native DNA. Her vocals become the centrepiece in the song just based on her simplistic use of it.

II Tantric Sex is an interesting Hindu concept of making love to your partner while being one with them in many ways than just the physical aspect. It is a slow and seamless interaction that takes away all the hedonistic objectives and focuses on being conscious of your partner. Nirvana brings that very concept to life in her music with the song II Tantric Sex. She didn’t stop just there, she also packaged the single with its own lyric video. The song is evidently the strongest out of the three and not just based on the subject matter but because she manages to tick all the boxes on this.

She wraps up Cosmic Bae Trilogy III with III Red Moon. All the songs together feel like a mood board for personal elements in her life and that brings you to closer proximity to her as an artist. She briefly articulates her story and with it being such a short release, there is very little room to oversaturate and lose the aim of the narrative. It leaves you feeling there is more she still has and wants to offer. Nirvana handles all the production throughout the project and that makes it feel more like a personal project.
