When you’re always trying to discover new music on the internet, you come across a variation of sounds. It’s a discovery of gems, garbage or sometimes a generic type of music that you wish you could stop hearing. Today, I came across something fresh, something I could classify as a gem. A short EP titled Radio by Slade. Composed of only seven songs, the tape is only ten minutes long but indeed a musical experience.
Slade is a rapper based in Bloemfontein. His music takes shape in the mould of an Overly Dedicated Kendrick Lamar mixed with Isaiah Rashad on Cilvia Demo. Radio consists of production that relies on sampling and a composition that is instrument based. The EP shy’s away from the whole 808 drums, synths and hi hats production that you generally find in Hip Hop now. The main part of the extended play is it’s lyrical content, you find Slade on WEDONE expressing how he feels about the lack of lyricism from his peers.
Radio may sound like a collection of skits and interludes put together to create a really awesome body of work. The samples make it a very interesting catalogue of music. As a project it has a very cold feel to it. Standout songs on the EP are EYESPL, SLADIO and on CHANCE where he talks about blowing his chance with a woman that he desired. Radio is an interesting short project. It conceptualises a couple of ideas and delivers them in a short and compact style.
