Singer and songwriter Red Robyn has been gradually building up her fanbase within the South African Indie music space. She’s certainly come a long way since the release of her 2017 compilation effort PEOPLE TALK with producer Jaedon Daniel.

Though her own solo releases have been few and far between, she’s managed to stay relevant through hanging around like-minded collaborators. This has allowed her to string together collaborations with the likes of MISSU, Joe Louis, Skatta and The World of Birds.

She has also managed to knit pack a few interesting singles here and there, with her most recent single being Dust & Iron coming in March last year. her singles catalogue also include a two-pack called Jumper Cables, it included The Pits and Gladiolus. Jumper Cables was released on SoundCloud and The Pits was later available on major streaming platforms.

Speaking on why she hasn’t released a full-length project yet, “If I had a million dollars, I would have seven albums out”. Being an independent artist, she has to take care of every single cost that goes into making her music. “I know the level of quality [music] I want to put out and I don’t want to compromise on that”. She finds herself working towards the best situation to put out her first project, “you know, these songs are very special to me and I want to do them justice”. In the process, she has managed to break the paradigm of having to put out a plethora of music just to get booked for shows, “when I first started out, everyone would say; ‘oh you need an EP, you need an album if you don’t have an EP, if you don’t have an album you not going to get booked for shows’. I’ve been playing shows for the last five years without an EP or an album”. She’s really found her own formula and what truly works for her.

Having moved from Durban to being based in Cape Town since December 2019. Robyn has really had to transition from the East coast to the West. Her relocation has solely been career based since she became apart of Cape Town indie band The World Of Birds. She sheds light on how she became the latest edition to the group, “we have a mutual friend Sean Ross – MISSU, we were in Cape Town in September two years ago. They were playing a show at the Raptor Room and he suggested I open for them and the rest was history. We sort of kept contact and eventually they asked me to join the band”.

Keeping true to herself and formula, Red Robyn has put out her latest single Got Me which has production from Benjamin McCarthy and backing vocals from Nic Preen both from The World Of Birds, “we recorded the song in September 2019 in Benjamin’s lounge in Noordhoek. I lived with him for a month, we made about seven or eight songs and Got Me was the first song that we were really excited about”. Her latest single will be part of her upcoming trilogy EP titled Girls Wear Pink which will be released later this year.

Got Me Official Lyrics by Red Robyn

Verse 1

What was it like when you first saw me
Did I live in your head for a whole week
Did something I say make you think I
Needed someone to sweep me off of my feet
Were you hoping you’d see me in the street
And just walk by so casually
Come over and say hello
You only get once
Only one

Chorus

Baby You You Got me
Stuck in my head
Baby you
Baby you got me
I don’t wanna stay friends

Verse 2

Wasn’t looking to find when I lost my heart
I was doing alright yea I can play the part
Were you looking at me yea I was looking at you
Promised myself I’d never make the first move
But If I’m being honest it’s not the whole truth
If its any consolation I’m not doing too well to be patient tired of waiting

Chorus

Baby You You Got me
Stuck in my head
Baby you
Baby you got me
I don’t wanna stay friends
